Worried that he can't support his pregnant wife, Ellen (Cathy O'Donnell), on his meager income as a mailman, Joe Norson (Farley Granger) impulsively swipes $30,000 from the office of sleazy attorney Victor Backett (Edmon Ryan). But when Joe's bartender pal, Nick (Ed Max), takes off with the ill-gotten cash, Joe finds himself trapped in a chain of double-crosses and misunderstandings, hunted by both Backett's murderous henchman, Georgie (James Craig), and the New York City police.
