George Steele (Pat O'Brien), an expert in detecting forged paintings, is caught breaking into an art museum one night, and seeks the help of psychiatrist Dr. Lowell (Ray Collins) hoping to find some explanation for his irrational actions. With the aid of reporter Terry Cordell (Claire Trevor), George retraces his steps and discovers he's been set up. Soon the forgery expert is sought as a murder suspect and must find the mastermind behind the plot to ruin his name before it's too late.
